We’ll Get Through This Together
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
When I came home from military duty last month, my wife Susan could tell I was distracted. On the same day that U.S. forces were striking Iranian-backed militias in the Middle East, our son, Sergeant Will Dellicker, was arriving in theater to protect American interests in the Horn of Africa.
Susan asked me what was wrong. I told her that I wasn’t ready to be reading the news every day about the latest attacks on U.S. forces and then waiting to hear that Will is safe. She squeezed my hand, looked me in the eye and reassured me.
“Kevin, everything will be ok,” said Susan. “You forget that I’ve already done this four times when you were overseas. We’ll get through this together.”
Right now, thousands of servicemen and women, including hundreds of Pennsylvania Army National Guardsmen, are deployed in harm’s way defending our country. And thousands of family members are left behind praying for their safe return.
In the Guard and Reserves, Members live in their communities, far away from big military bases. There’s no guarantee that other military families live nearby or that support staff are available to help. Often, their neighbors don’t even know they’re deployed.
Susan and I wrote a book about the unique family support challenges affecting the Guard and Reserves. Twenty Percent Soldiers provides advice and encouragement to military reservists and their families going through difficult times. Together, Susan and I have shared our story with hundreds of families and donated all book proceeds to benefit veterans and military families.
I want to go to Congress and improve the family support system for all military members, veterans, and first responders. They put their lives on the line to protect us, and their families serve right alongside them. We ask so much of those serving in uniform and their families. They deserve our full support.
