Hong Kong is Losing its Freedoms Fast

Hong Kong used to be among the freest and prosperous nations in the world. But since the United Kingdom (UK) transferred governance of the city to the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong is losing its identity and its freedoms.

The Issue:

As part of the transfer agreement with the UK, the Chinese government agreed to honor basic freedoms for the people of Hong Kong for a period of 50 years. After Xi Jinping took power in China, the government reneged on that agreement and has rapidly passed a series of laws to impose Chinese Communist Party (CCP) control.

How It Affects Us:

Hong Kong is the financial capital of Asia and a critical hub for American companies doing business around the world. Their investments are in jeopardy, as China repeatedly demonstrates that they will do whatever they want within their borders.

What Kevin Will Do About It:

In Congress, I will speak out in support of the free people of Hong Kong and Macau and work to:

  • Penalize Chinese officials who confiscate American property, harm American citizens, or otherwise degrade the value of American interests in Hong Kong and Macau.
  • Assist American businesses with the repatriation of Hong Kong and Macau assets.
  • Revoke special privileges for Hong Kong and Macau entities proportional to China’s illegal usurpation of their rights to self-governance.
