Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Yesterday at the Blue Valley Farm Show outside Bangor, I was talking with my new friends Joe and Francine, who moved to the Slate Belt from North Jersey a few years ago. I asked them why they came to the Lehigh Valley and Francine told the most inspiring story.

She said her family was camping near Mt. Bethel and stopped by a roadside stand to buy some vegetables, but there was nobody there to take the money. Instead, she just found a Tupperware container with a hole in the lid to put the cash.

She had never seen anything like that before and thought something was wrong or it was a trick. She put her money in the container and left with the tomatoes but worried all week about the experience.

The following weekend they went camping again, and this time the farmer was at the stand. He explained that no, nothing was wrong, that he’s been using the honor system for years. He said the only problem he ever has is that sometimes people forget to put the rock back on the container and the lid blows off.

Francine was amazed. She told her husband that she wanted to live in a place where people can sell vegetables like that, where she could prove to her kids that there are still honest people left in the world. So, they packed up and moved to Bangor.
