Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Last week at Moore Township Community Days, I met a gentle man with an amazing story named Mehmet (Mike) Zimmer.

Mike is the owner of the Original Doughboy’s Pizza Restaurant in Wind Gap, Northampton County. It’s a popular place with great food that the locals love. I sat down with him today in his restaurant to talk about his life, his business, and his hopes for his beloved United States of America.

Mike grew up in Bulgaria during communist rule. He was a champion wrestler, touring the nation and meeting young Americans during his athletic contests. In 1972 at age 17, he and three friends cut through an electric fence, crawled across a minefield, and escaped the communist country into Greece.

Mike arrived in America with $45 in his pocket. He took some tough jobs in New Jersey and Florida and made his way to northeastern Pennsylvania. After working hard, saving money, and taking his fair share of hard knocks, Mike became a successful business owner, community leader, and family man. You can read about him here.

Mike told me about his hopes for our country and our community. If he were king, he said, he would crack down on crime. He also wishes for less red tape and fewer bureaucratic hurdles that make it difficult to serve customers and create jobs. He said many politicians have no idea what it takes to run a local business.

Mostly though, Mike loves his adopted country. He’s grateful for the opportunities he’s received and his religious freedom. And he goes out of his way to thank the men and women in the United States Armed Forces.

Like many of you, Mike is concerned that we are losing our American way of life. But he’s also optimistic that hope and freedom will prevail. People like Mike, who actually lived under tyranny, always seem to be the ones who appreciate their freedom the most.
