A Promise to a Local Hero

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I want to introduce you to an amazing patriot and local community leader, Major General (Ret) Marvin Jay Barry of Franklin Township, Carbon County. He’s in the middle of this photo, taken last week in Allentown.

A graduate of Lehighton High School, MG Barry became the first Carbon County native to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy. He earned his silver wings as a C-130 pilot in 1971 and promptly deployed overseas, serving two tours in the Vietnam War. He came home, rose up through the ranks, and commanded a combat squadron in Operation Desert Storm. In 2006, MG Barry retired with two Distinguished Service Medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses, making him one of the highest-ranking and most decorated military veterans in the history of PA’s 7th District.

MG Barry served for several years as a member of Susan Wild’s Congressional Military Academy Nomination Board, which reviews applications from local students to attend the service academies. It’s a role he cherished because he could help launch the military careers of young people seeking to serve their nation, just as he did almost sixty years ago.

Unfortunately, MG Barry is no longer on the Nominations Board. He resigned his position after Susan Wild’s recent comments disparaging the people of Carbon County, which MG Barry said, “crossed a red line.” He wrote in his resignation letter, “I feel that remarks you made in a Jan. 29 news report were extremely offensive to your constituents in Carbon County where I have been a longtime resident.” Indeed. You can read the account here.

My father and I had breakfast with MG Barry and two other decorated Air Force Academy graduates, Maj (Ret) Bruce Barry and Lt Col (Ret) Jack Norman. I’m humbled to announce that they’re all on the Veterans for Dellicker team. There’s more than a century of service in this photo. I’m honored by their service and support.

Here’s a promise to you, MG Barry. If I’m elected your Congressman from PA-7, you can have your spot back on the Academy Selection Board. Then you can continue to serve our community and our nation with honor and dignity, just li

Keep America Free.
