National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

On National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, thank you to all who serve and protect.

Law enforcement officers put themselves in danger every day to help their neighbors and their communities. Yet, heaven forbid you make a mistake. Because in this environment, police must be perfect. And even when you execute flawlessly, some people will still find a reason to criticize, accuse, or condemn.

As someone who’s worn a uniform for 26 years, I know what that feels like. In the military, sometimes we must make tough calls to protect innocent lives. We train to get things right, use controls to check our work, and employ tools to be extra sure.

But in the chaos of conflict, sometimes we get it wrong. Then the New York Times runs an article about U.S. troops targeting civilians with a condescending tone and judgmental bias.

Why do we put up with this? Because it’s in our nature to serve. We want to protect those who cannot defend themselves, and even those who won’t defend themselves. That’s what we do.

I want you to know that if I am elected, I will have your backs. Law enforcement officers deserve the benefit of the doubt and all the support and resources you need to do your jobs. I will fight to make sure that your safety and effectiveness is never hampered by misguided bureaucrats or grandstanding politicians.

Thank you for your service.
