China Is Still Stonewalling About COVID-19
According to various sources, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 is approaching 400 million and the number of deaths attributed to the virus has eclipsed 5.7 million. The consensus is that the virus originated in the Wuhan area of China before spreading throughout the world, but there are several theories about how that occurred. One is that the virus spread from an exotic animal to humans in a nearby “wet market.” Another is that the virus escaped from a research lab in the city. The American intelligence community has not reached a consensus on the origins, but they are sure about one thing: the Chinese aren’t cooperating with the investigation.
China simply cannot be trusted. Not on small matters. Not on enormously important matters, like a global pandemic that contributed to the deaths of 900,000 Americans and counting.
How It Affects Us:
Suppose we can eventually prove that China let COVID-19 leak from a lab and failed to tell the world about it. Can we simply acknowledge that fact and then go cut another trade deal with China? What does it take before American politicians and businesspeople realize what is happening in China? Ten million dead? Twenty million? For some Americans, it seems that no price is too steep for them to double down on partnering with China.
What Kevin Will Do About It:
We need to get to the bottom of what happened with COVID-19, not just to respond accordingly, but to make sure it doesn’t happen again. We must:
- Conduct a full investigation into the origins of COVID-19.
- Transfer the production of pharmaceuticals, personal protective equipment, medical devices, and healthcare technology to reliable sources outside of China.
- Prohibit federal funding of Chinese labs.
- Allow Americans to file lawsuits against Chinese parties for damages related to Covid-19.
