China Continues to Steal American Technology

In my previous post about environmental destruction in China, I pointed out that lax environmental and labor regulations combined with currency manipulation and government subsidies create unfair conditions for American companies to compete with Chinese manufacturing. But there is another issue that exacerbates the problem and cannot be ignored. The Chinese government is engaged in a systematic and deliberate effort to steal intellectual property and trade secrets from American companies. Essentially, the Chinese Communist Party acts like a massive, organized crime organization. And, we had better wake up to their thievery.

The Issue:

According to FBI Director Christopher Wray, his agency has 2,000 open investigations focused on the Chinese government trying to steal U.S. information and technology, and they open a new one every twelve hours. They send Chinese academics to American institutions and make them act as Chinese spies. They pore over social media accounts looking for potential American agents. And they exploit American companies doing business in China once they are established there.

How It Affects Us:

According to Director Wray, “Whatever makes an industry tick, they target: source code from software companies, testing data and chemical designs from pharma firms, engineering designs from manufacturers, personal data from hospitals, credit bureaus, and banks. They’ve even sent people to sneak into agribusinesses’ fields and dig up advanced seeds out of the ground. The common thread is that they steal the things companies can’t afford to lose. So, the Chinese government’s economic theft campaign is not just unprecedented in its breadth, it’s also deeply damaging—undoing the labor, ideas, and investments of decades, and leaving lives overturned in its wake.”

Exactly. This is hurting workers and families right here in the Lehigh Valley. And its time we make it stop.

What Kevin Will Do About It:

American politicians and businesspeople need to recognize the threat from China and take escalating action to change the behavior of the Chinese Communist Party. We can start by doing the following:

  • Delist Chinese companies from American stock exchanges.
  • Restrict members and associates of the Chinese Communist Party from investing in American real estate, doing businesses with American companies, or endowing American academic institutions.
  • Prohibit Chinese citizens from working on sensitive research projects funded by the federal government.
  • Prohibit Chinese firms that steal U.S. intellectual property from doing business with Americans.
  • Encourage American individuals to stop financing Chinese companies by creating a temporary capital gains tax holiday for selling certain Chinese securities.
